Psychological milestones
Here are the "milestones" recognized in the HYROX community:
Sub 90 (1 h 30)
Serious amateur milestone. Distinguishes those who "did HYROX" from those who "do HYROX." Top 30% of the Open category. See How to go Sub 90.
Sub 75 (1 h 15)
True competitor milestone. Top 10-20%. See Sub 75 strategy.
Sub 60 (1 h)
Elite milestone. Top 1-5%. See Sub 60 elite.
Target time based on your profile
First-timer
Realistic: finish in 1 h 30 - 2 h 00 depending on your starting point.
Comfortable: 1 h 35 - 1 h 50 if you follow the 8-week program.
Doing your 2nd-3rd race
- Realistic: 1 h 25 - 1 h 35 (5-10 min gains from 1st race)
- Target: sub 90 if you have a good athletic base
Experienced runner
- Realistic: 1 h 20 - 1 h 30
- Target: sub 75 in 6-12 months of specific preparation
CrossFit / fitness athlete
- Realistic: 1 h 25 - 1 h 35 (need to build up running)
- Target: sub 90 then sub 75
Average time per specific race
Average times vary slightly depending on the race:
| Race | Median Open Men's Time |
|---|---|
| Paris Grand Palais | 1 h 23 |
| Stockholm Worlds | 1 h 18 (elite-heavy) |
| Manchester | 1 h 22 |
| Hamburg | 1 h 20 |
| Las Vegas | 1 h 25 |
| Lyon (1st edition) | To be determined |
| Nice | 1 h 26 |
→ Races with a higher level (Worlds, Manchester, Hamburg) have a faster median time than regional races.
Time evolution over time
If you do HYROX 2-3 times/year with structured preparation:
| Race | Typical gain vs previous |
|---|---|
| 1st | Reference |
| 2nd | -8 to -15 min |
| 3rd | -5 to -10 min |
| 4th | -3 to -5 min |
| 5th+ | -2 to -3 min, plateau |
→ The big gains are made on the first 2-3 races. Beyond that, plateau or marginal progression.
Why my time seems slow compared to the Internet
The times seen on Instagram and YouTube are biased. Most athletes who post are sub 90 or sub 75. This is not the average level.
The true Open Men's median is 1 h 25-1 h 30. If you are at 1 h 35, you are average, not behind.
In summary
- Average Open Men's time: 1 h 25-1 h 30
- Average Open Women's time: 1 h 35-1 h 40
- Sub 90 = top 30% (serious amateur milestone)
- Sub 75 = top 10-20% (competitor milestone)
- Sub 60 = top 1-5% (elite milestone)
- Worlds/elite races have a faster median time
- Evolution: -8 to -15 min between 1st and 2nd race is typical
