How long does a HYROX take?
The Quick Answer
A HYROX race lasts between 60 and 110 minutes depending on your level.
Average Times Table
| Level | Average Open Time |
|---|---|
| Beginner (1st race) | 1 hr 50 - 2 hr 10 |
| Regular athlete | 1 hr 25 - 1 hr 45 |
| Sub 90 (amateur competitor) | 1 hr 25 - 1 hr 30 |
| Sub 75 (true competitor) | 1 hr 15 |
| Sub 60 (elite) | 1 hr |
| Men's World Top | 52-58 min |
| Women's World Top | 1 hr 02 - 1 hr 08 |
For Your First HYROX
If you're doing it for the first time, aim to finish, not for time. Realistic:
- Regular athlete: 1 hr 30 - 1 hr 50
- Occasional athlete: 1 hr 50 - 2 hr 10
- Sedentary returning to sport: 2 hr - 2 hr 30
How the Time Breaks Down
For a typical 1 hr 30 race:
- 8 km running = ~40 min
- 8 stations = ~40 min
- 8 Roxzone transitions = ~10 min
- Total: 1 hr 30
→ Running = 45% of the total time. Most athletes underestimate this.
Differences between Men / Women
At an equivalent level, women on average finish 5-10 minutes slower than men in Open, mainly due to:
- Fewer wall balls (75 vs 100), so an advantage in stations
- Pure running is slower on average
- Proportionally equivalent loads
A sub 1 hr 35 woman = a sub 1 hr 25 man in terms of relative effort.
Evolution Over Time
If you do HYROX regularly (2-3 races/year, structured prep):
- Year 1: -10 min vs 1st race
- Year 2: -10-15 additional min
- Year 3+: plateau or marginal progression
The biggest gains are made in the first 2 years.
World Records
- Men Open: ~52 min (record evolving)
- Women Open: ~1 hr 02
- Men Pro: ~57 min
- Women Pro: ~1 hr 06
- Doubles: ~1 hr 02 (men)
Why the Format Lasts Exactly This Long
HYROX was designed to last around 1 hr 30 for the average amateur. Shorter than a marathon (~3-4 hrs), longer than a CrossFit WOD (~10-30 min). Sweet spot for intensity + endurance.
