What is HYROX? A quick definition

The definition in one sentence

HYROX is a functional fitness race that combines 8 km of running and 8 muscle effort stations, in an identical format worldwide.

It's neither pure running nor CrossFit. It's its own format, halfway between long-distance running and functional fitness.

The format in brief

You repeat the same sequence 8 times:

1 km run → 1 functional station → return run

At the finish: 8 km accumulated + 8 stations completed in a row. Total: 60 to 110 minutes depending on your level.

The 8 stations in order:
1. SkiErg (1,000 m)
2. Sled Push (50 m)
3. Sled Pull (50 m)
4. Burpee Broad Jumps (80 m)
5. Rowing (1,000 m)
6. Farmers Carry (200 m)
7. Sandbag Lunges (100 m)
8. Wall Balls (100 reps male / 75 female)

How long HYROX has existed

HYROX was created in 2017 in Hamburg by two German entrepreneurs. First edition: 650 participants. In 2026: over 700,000 finishers expected for the global season. Fastest growth in competitive fitness in Europe.

Who can do HYROX

Any regular athlete can finish HYROX with 8 to 16 weeks of preparation. No technical skills needed (unlike CrossFit). No need to be super strong. You just need to be able to:
- Run 5 km without stopping
- Do a correct squat
- Have average general endurance

If you are sedentary, plan for a minimum of 16-20 weeks.
