Can you do HYROX without running?
The Quick Answer
No, you cannot complete HYROX as an individual without running. Running accounts for a cumulative 8 km during the race, which is approximately 45% of the total time. It is the cornerstone of the format.
But there are alternatives if you don't want to run: Relay, Doubles, or the Adaptive category.
Why Running is Central to HYROX
The HYROX format = 8 km of running + 8 stations. You cannot replace running with something else. If you walk, you'll take three times as long. If you refuse to run, you won't finish within the time limit.
→ HYROX is above all a fitness race. Functional strength is secondary to cardio-running.
Alternatives to Running
Option 1 — Relay Category
Relay = team of 4. You share the 8 stations + 8 km of running.
If you hate running:
- Choose 0 km of running (the other person does the running)
- Take 2 stations without running (but this isn't the official format — check)
Relay allows highly specialized athletes to participate (a runner, a lifter, a cardio specialist, a mental strength specialist).
Option 2 — Doubles Category
Doubles = team of 2. You alternate running and stations. Each person runs 4 km (half of the total).
If you can run 4 km (instead of 8), Doubles is the solution. See HYROX Doubles strategy.
Option 3 — Adaptive Category
HYROX has an Adaptive category for athletes with disabilities. The format is adapted according to capabilities. Inquire with the local organization.
Option 4 — Fast Walking (not recommended)
Theoretically, you can walk instead of running in the Open category. But:
- Total time ≈ 3 hours 30 minutes - 4 hours
- No official cut-off time generally, but you'll be closing out the race
- A grueling experience
- No technical HYROX challenge (it's no longer a race, it's a long walk)
→ Not recommended. If you truly cannot run, go for Doubles or Relay.
Minimum Running Ability Required
To complete HYROX Open as an individual without excessive suffering:
| Minimum Running Level | Consequence |
|---|---|
| 5 km in 30 min | You will finish, slowly (~2 h 15) |
| 5 km in 25 min | You will finish OK (~1 h 50) |
| 5 km in 22 min | You will finish well (~1 h 30) |
| 5 km in 19 min | Sub 90 achievable |
| 5 km in 17 min | Sub 75 achievable |
The truly realistic minimum: 5 km in 28-30 min. Below that, consider Doubles rather than Open individual.
If You Really Can't Run
You've never run? You're starting from pure walking?
Progressive Plan (16-20 weeks)
- Weeks 1-4: brisk walking 30-45 min, 4-5 times/week
- Weeks 5-8: alternate walking/running (1 min running, 2 min walking)
- Weeks 9-12: continuous running 20-30 min
- Weeks 13-16: running 30-45 min + intervals
- Weeks 17-20: specific HYROX prep
→ See HYROX from scratch for the complete plan.
The False Alternative: Fast Walking
Many athletes think "I'll walk quickly, that counts." Wrong. Walking = 6-7 km/h. Running = 10-12 km/h. Over 8 km, that's a 30-40 minute difference. You'll finish in the last 3 positions, over 3 hours into the race.
It's technically allowed, but it's giving up on HYROX.
Why HYROX Cannot Be Done Without Running
HYROX was designed as a race. The format comes from the concept of "long-distance running + stations that interrupt the rhythm." Without running, it's not HYROX — it's a series of isolated stations.
The compromised running aspect (running on dead legs after a station) is the DNA of the format. Without running, you miss 50% of the difficulty and 50% of the meaning.
The Right Mindset for Non-Runners
If you don't like running but want to do HYROX:
1. Accept that you will have to learn to run (this is the mandatory step)
2. Progressive plan: 12-16 weeks minimum to go from walking to continuous running
3. Run at an easy endurance pace at first (conversational zone)
4. Patience: running is built up, the first week is the hardest
5. Reward: at 12 weeks, you'll be running 5 km. At 20 weeks, you'll be doing HYROX.
In Summary
- No, you cannot do individual HYROX without running
- Yes, alternatives exist: Doubles (4 km instead of 8), Relay (team of 4), Adaptive
- Minimum running for Open: 5 km in 28-30 min
- No running at all: 16-20 week prep, no shortcut
- Fast walking in HYROX = you'll finish over 3 hours, not really HYROX
HYROX is primarily a running event. If you absolutely refuse to run, Doubles is the way. Otherwise, accept becoming a runner — it's a mandatory step.
