HYROX Gear: The Complete Equipment Guide (Race Day + Training)

HYROX equipment falls into two very different categories: what you need on race day, and what you need for training at home or in the gym. This guide covers both, with realistic budgets and marketing pitfalls to avoid.

Essentials for Race Day

If you're racing tomorrow, here's the minimum list.

Item Why Estimated Price
Hybrid shoes The only gear that can slow you down €130-180
Breathable technical tee Cotton = disaster for 1.5 hours of effort €25-50
Shorts or short tights Freedom of movement, quick-drying €30-60
Technical socks Not just any socks €12-20
Sports bra (women) High impact essential €35-60
Cap or headband Sweat in eyes = no-go on wall balls €15-25
Compact backpack Lockers often full, manage your gear €40-80

For shoes, see our dedicated HYROX shoe guide — this is the most important and least improvisable item.

The Tee: Technical > Trendy

You'll sweat 1 to 2 liters in 1.5 hours. Your tee will soak up water. If it's cotton, it will get heavy, rub, and cost you 30 seconds per station just from discomfort.

What you need: breathable polyester, mesh in sweat zones (back, armpits), fitted but not tight cut.

What to avoid:
- The 100% cotton "vintage" tee
- The oversized, baggy tee (gets in the way on sandbag lunges)
- Tees with many seams on the shoulders (rub under the sandbag)

Good budget option: Decathlon Domyos entry-level at €15 is more than enough to start. When you want to upgrade, Bandit, Saysky, Tracksmith, Lululemon Metal Vent, Nike Dri-FIT ADV.

Regarding event merch, that's us (no pressure) — we do drops for finished races, in breathable technical tees, not museum cotton. See the collection.

The Shorts — Short, Light, No Pockets

5 to 7 inches (12-18 cm) depending on your body type, in polyester or nylon. Flexible elastic waistband (no flapping drawstring). Ideally with integrated inner shorts (boxer brief) to prevent chafing.

Avoid:
- Shorts with zippered pockets: rattle on the sled
- Trail shorts that are too long
- Cotton basketball shorts

Compression under shorts: controversial. Some athletes wear them (muscle compression, anti-chafing), others find them annoying on the rower. Test in simulation before race day.

Socks — The Forgotten Detail

No cotton socks. You'll get blisters by km 2.

Look for:
- Technical sports socks (Decathlon Kiprun, Stance, Bombas, Saysky)
- Mid-crew height (ankle covered) — not no-show socks that slip, not tube socks
- Mesh on the top of the foot, reinforced heel and forefoot

Budget: €12-20 per pair. Buy 3-4 identical pairs for prep and race day.

Sports Bra (Women)

Non-negotiable: high impact, correct size. A bad bra costs a lot in comfort over 1.5 hours and can literally restrict your breathing on wall balls and burpees.

Reference brands: Shock Absorber Run, Lululemon Enlite, Nike Alpha, Brooks Dare, Decathlon Kalenji High Support.

Useful Accessories (Not All Essential)

Cap or Headband

Not for fashion. To prevent sweat from dripping into your eyes during wall balls. A lightweight running cap like Tracksmith, Ciele, Decathlon Kalenji does the job.

Gel or Flask Belt

If you're aiming for sub 1h 15, not essential. Beyond that, a gel after station 4 makes a real difference. A compact belt or a 250 ml handheld flask is sufficient.

Wrist Wraps

Useful for wall balls (repeated impact). €5-10 a pair, optional unless you have sensitive wrists.

Gloves

Controversial. Theoretically useful for sled pull (rough rope) and wall balls (sweat on the ball). In practice, many athletes end up taking them off. If you want to try, get CrossFit-style gloves (Bear Komplex, Picsil) for €25-35.

Compact Backpack

30-40 L, two compartments, comfortable to carry. Upon arrival, you put your change of clothes + towel + post-race protein inside. The bag is your logistical ally, not a travel bag.

Home Prep Equipment

If you want to train with a quality close to race day, without breaking the bank, here's the equipment to invest in gradually.

Level 1 — Essentials (~€150)

Item Price Use
Adjustable Sandbag 5-25 kg €50-90 Lunges, carries, simulations
Kettlebell 16 kg (women) or 24 kg (men) €30-50 Farmers carry, swings, accessories
Jump Rope €10-20 Cardio, warm-up
Exercise Mat €20-40 Burpees, mobility, core work

Level 2 — Comfort (~€300)

Add to the above:
- Weighted medicine ball 6 kg women / 9 kg men: €35-60 — for wall balls (target wall if possible)
- Mini home sled or prowler: €100-200. If you have a yard or parking lot, this is a game-changer. Otherwise, push a car on dry asphalt.
- Weighted vest 10 kg: €40-70 — useful for making movements more demanding and simulating HYROX fatigue during runs.

Level 3 — Full Setup (~€600+)

  • Used Concept2 Rower: €400-700 — this is the game-changing investment. Essential if you're serious about a sub 1h 30.
  • Pull-up bar + dip station: €100-150
  • Multi-position bench: €150-250

A dedicated SkiErg costs €800-1,200. Unless you're doing this professionally or aiming for the world's top, the rower does a great job (the benefits transfer).

Equipment NOT to buy (marketing traps)

Questionable "HYROX specific" shoes

Niche brands releasing a "HYROX" shoe to ride the trend, without a track record. Stick to brands with proven models: Nike, NoBull, Reebok, On, Adidas, Puma (which has an official HYROX partnership). Details in the shoe guide.

"HYROX performance" supplements

HYROX performance comes from training and basic nutrition. No magic powder. Whey if you want for recovery, creatine possibly, electrolytes for long sessions. The rest is marketing.

Weightlifting belts

For HYROX, the loads on sled push/pull and sandbag do not justify a rigid belt. A flexible nylon belt perhaps, never a power bodybuilding belt.

Online coaches at €200/month

Self-guided programs like Roxlife app, Functional Bodybuilding, or our 8-week beginner program cover 95% of needs. Premium coaching is only useful from a sub 1h 15.

Total Budget by Level

Level Race Day Outfit Prep Gear Total
Bare Minimum €80 €0 (gym/public park) €80
Comfort €200 €150 €350
Serious Amateur €350 €300 €650
Competitor €450 €600+ €1,050+

The ratio to know: for most beginners, 80% of the budget goes to shoes + rower. The rest builds up gradually.

In Summary — What Really Matters

  1. Adapted shoes tested in simulation
  2. Breathable technical apparel (no cotton)
  3. A sandbag + kettlebell at home to replicate stations
  4. A rower (in gym or at home) — this is the equipment with the highest ROI

Everything else is secondary or optional. Invest in shoes and a rower first, comfort follows.
