What Is HYROX? The Complete Race Format Guide
HYROX is a global indoor fitness race that combines 8km of running with eight functional exercise stations — each station completed once, in a fixed order, at standardised weights and distances. Created in Hamburg in 2017, HYROX now runs 60+ events per year across Europe, North America and Australia, with over one million registered athletes. It is the fastest-growing fitness race format in the world.
The Origins of HYROX
HYROX was founded in 2017 by Christian Toetzke and Moritz Fürste — an Olympic field hockey gold medallist — in Hamburg, Germany. The concept was to create a fitness race that combined the measurability of a road race with the functional fitness demands of a gym competition, in a format accessible to recreational athletes while remaining meaningful at the elite level. The first event drew 700 athletes. By 2022 the format had expanded to 35 countries. By 2026 it operates as the dominant global standard for hybrid fitness competition, with a world championships held annually and pro athletes competing for prize money and global rankings.
The Race Format — How HYROX Works
Every HYROX race follows an identical format regardless of city or venue. Athletes complete eight rounds of 1km running, each followed by one functional exercise station. The stations, in order, are: SkiErg (1000m), Sled Push (50m), Sled Pull (50m), Burpee Broad Jump (80m), Rowing (1000m), Farmers Carry (200m), Sandbag Lunges (100m), Wall Balls (100 reps). Total running distance: 8km. Categories include HYROX Open, HYROX Pro, Women’s versions of both, and Doubles formats for pairs and relay teams. The standardised format means a finish time in London in January is directly comparable to a finish time in Berlin in March — enabling a global leaderboard and meaningful season-on-season improvement tracking.
HYROX Station Weights — Open vs Pro
The Open category uses: SkiErg 1000m, Sled Push 50m (102kg men / 78kg women), Sled Pull 50m (78kg men / 56kg women), Burpee Broad Jump 80m, Rowing 1000m, Farmers Carry 200m (24kg per hand men / 16kg per hand women), Sandbag Lunges 100m (20kg men / 10kg women), Wall Balls 100 reps (6kg to 9ft target men / 4kg to 9ft women). The Pro category increases weights significantly and is reserved for competitive athletes with established HYROX finishing times.
HYROX and the Hybrid Athlete Identity
HYROX has created a new athletic identity — the hybrid athlete — that sits at the intersection of endurance sport and functional fitness. The hybrid athlete trains running and strength simultaneously, understands that race performance requires both capacities developed in combination, and measures progress against a specific, reproducible benchmark. The finisher culture that has grown around HYROX reflects this identity: the HYROX finisher merch is the badge that marks membership in the community of athletes who have completed the race and understand what that required.
